My Gear List

Hiking Essentials

My essentials are many, and the list will vary depending on the time of year. Trip optional items will be denoted with an asterisk (*).

Granite Gear Air Pocket Packing Kit, Med, Light weight and waterproof storage bag. Fits the most critical essentials

Map / Itinerary / Notes, I have a physical printed copy in a gallon Ziploc bag and a digital copy on my phone

Suunto MC-2 Pro Compass, There are definitely smaller and lighter options available

Petzl TIKKA Head Lamp - 200 Lumens, Light and bright, uses AAA batteries

Neutrogena Sunscreen, 50 SPF, I prefer Neutrogena because I feel it’s much less greasy then many other options

Burts Bees Lip Balm, SPF 15, helps against sun, wind and snow

*Sawyer Insect Repellent, this is my preferred brand

Basic First-aid Kit (Includes Blister Kit) - I just put my own together to save on space and weight.  Just the basics!

·       *Adventure Medical Kits Blister Medic, blister and mole skin to help your feet

·       Adventure Medical Kit, this is a good basic kit. Just take out the things you need and put them in a small zip-lock bag

·       Medications: Tums, ibuprofen, Pepo, and Imodium, and anything else you need

*Mountain Series Weekender First-Aid Kit, this is a larger and heavier option that I tend to only take when hiking with more unexperienced hikers or day-hikes

Gerber Multi Tool, having a good knife and some pliers is a necessity in the backcountry.

UCO Titan Stormproof Match Kit, I like to take stormproof matches. You just never know.

Bic Lighter, Light and cheap

Water Bottle / Purification Option

·       Potable Aqua Chlorine Dioxide Tabs, light and good for emergencies

·       *Sawyer Products Mini Water Filtration, light and small. Better for one person

·       *MSR MiniWorks EX Water Filter, Light but bulky. Better for a multiple people

Whistle, many backpacks have integrated whistle as part of the chest strap, so check that before you buy one

Gorilla Tape, you don’t need an entire roll, you can store some on a water bottle or hiking pole

Toilet Kit (Toilet Paper, Trowel, Purell, wet wipes, blue bags, extra Ziploc bag)

Small Note Book & Pencil, I like the Rite in the Rain notebooks, they are a little pricy, but you don’t have to worry as much about them being destroyed in the weather

Zip Ties x4, light and helpful when you need to fix gear or build a quick shelter

Safety Pins x5, can be useful to fix gear or clothing

Paracord, 25 feet, So many uses, when you need it you will be glad you have it

Bandana, useful to wipe off sweet or gear, can also use a micro-fiber towel

InReach Satellite Messenger Explorer, Two-way satellite communicator

Cellular Phone (iPhone)

Garmin GPS 60CSx, Really like this GPS. It’s easy to upload maps and tracks, and then download the data when you get back from a trip. It also feels the most accurate given that it connects to so many satellites to track your position

2 or 4 extra AA Batteries & AAA Batteries

Charged Power Pack

o   *Anker PowerCore 10,000 mAh, Smaller and lighter for short trips

o   *Anker PowerCore 26,800 mAh, larger and heavier for longer trips
